JJC Earth Climate Change Discussion
Overview
A research proposal is a formal plan for a research paper that you present in a clear manner for your
instructor to understand. The proposal is your first step in your research paper writing. The intent of the
proposal is to begin brainstorming and narrowing down your topic, generate ideas relating to the
research topic and formulate questions you might want to consider when writing your paper.
Write your Research Paper Proposal in the following order:
A Title: Provide a brief and meaningful title to your paper. It may be too early to have a finalized title, so
come up with a tentative title for your paper.
An Introduction: Your introduction should identify your topic and how you would like to address it.
A Research Question: A research question is meant to direct your efforts as you collect sources, critically
read and evaluate them, and take notes on them. A Research question is preliminary to formulating
your thesis.
A Thesis Statement: Provide a preliminary (working) thesis statement.
Research Methodology: Define the research methods. Which research methods (e.g. survey, literature
review, case study …) will be used?
A Review of Literature: Provide an overview of the sources you have collected so far. In other words,
provide a summary of previous related research on the topic – what is known? What have been done by
others?
A Working Bibliography: List your sources in correct MLA Style. Also, provide a 3-4 sentences long
description of each source. Your working bibliography must include at least 3 sources.
Length: The proposal should be between 250-300 words. This does not include the working
bibliography.
My research topic is: How has the earth’s climate changed in the past few decades? (or global warming, anything you can find of climate change/global warming
