It is important to educate teachers, children, & parents about appropriate child nutrition education, eating patterns, the basic concepts of health- safety, hygiene, healthful living, good routines and habits. It is equally important to get children to have a positive attitude towards food and a nutritious lifestyle. While teaching about these things, children will be able to taste, prepare, look at and eat nutritious foods and learn all about them. Children will also play games, watch films and read books about a healthy lifestyle. They may even take special trips to learn about a certain food and how it is prepared.

Special activities gets children interested in the nutrition facts and how different foods effect their body depending on ingredients used to make the food. Children may take part in dramatic play, science, social studies, and math lessons as well as studying about different cultures foods to learn about different things. Another lesson that is taught about would be dental hygiene, personal hygiene, bathing, toileting, brushing teeth and hair, etc.. I think that it is good for children and families to learn about these different things that contribute to leading a healthy lifestyle. Especially when the whole family gets involved this makes a child want to learn and attend the lesson as well.

One of the most common safety factors for young children would be pets, but mainly dogs. Children often get bit in the neck, face, hands and arms due to their shortness in height and uncontrollable movements. Also, some parents are not supervising or teaching their young children how to be cautious while approaching, petting or how to handle animals. This is so important because all dog bites hurt, but the bigger the animal the more this can hurt a child and can even be fatal depending on where the child gets bit or how deep it goes. I had to learn this the hard way when I was a child, to not just abruptly pet a dog without letting it smell your hand first to kind of get approval.. thankfully it was a small dog breed and I still have quite a few scars.

Environmental hazards are also a safety factor. Children may pick up chemicals like mercury and radon because they are so close to the ground. As well as lead in tap water. Young children are more likely to be effected and hurt by lead. This can effect brain development and functioning, protein function and can make children have lower IQ scores. Inadequate supervision can effect a child’s safety as well.

MyPlate teaches children good nutrition, this is a picture of a plate with the basic good groups. MyPlate also shows a circle for dairy. There are four major food groups. These include fruit, vegetables, grains, & proteins. In order for children to grow, develop, and have energy, they need nutritious foods.

Mental health is supported by family mealtimes. Children who usually take part in family mealtimes are less at risk to abuse substances, have better academic achievements, and promotion of language development- according to our textbook. As well as children being at a reduced risk for being obese. This is also great for bonding and children can help set and clear the table before and after dinner. Since each culture including Arab, Chinese, Cuban, Mexican, Native American, and Indian cultures all prefer different foods, there is a website called the Southeastern Michigan Dietetic Association that has a health guide example for different cultures that are healthy.

Nutrition, Health, and Safety play great roles in children and their development. It’s very important for parents and teachers to be educated about these topics and also promote them. The child’s health and well-being is very important and should be taken seriously. Not only should it be taken seriously but it needs to be taught to the children. I feel a time out of the year should be some type of assembly with the school teaching the children the importance of self care because that’s the category all of this falls under.

Parents should be constantly teaching these things to their children. As parents there should be a good dietary plan for their children to eat to get all the nutrients and vitamins that they need. Health teaches them things like constantly washing their hands and sneezing in their elbow, or now with what Covid going around teaching the children to keep their masks on. And lastly safety just making sure the child knows don’t talk to strangers and just going with anyone.

One type of safety factor for children is environmental safety. Environmental safety is very concerning because children can be in situations that they think are innocent but it’s very dangerous. For example, My children in my Kindergarten class think it is okay t6o jump off of the rock climbing toy outside. They don’t understand how dangerous that is and that they could break something. Super vision and constantly telling and reminding them not to do different things will help them to understand.

The second and third safety factors are Food safety and Animal/ pet safety. Children Need to understand that just because you like something doesn’t mean you can have it. For example, if a child sees a dog they want to pet , but the child is allergic to dogs they need to know that they can not get close nor touch this animal. Dogs are the most common safety hazard which children love. Almost every child wants a dog. The same with food safety if a child is allergic to a certain food teach them that early so they will know when they are not in your presence to not eat it.

Myplate is a good source to reference when trying to eat a balanced meal. It guides you with portion sizes and the amount of daily intake you’re supposed to have in each food category. Eating a balanced diet is not easy, it’s a lot to understand so Myplate is very beneficial in that area. Different cultures have different food they can and can not eat. For example, I had this little girl in my class that couldn’t eat pork because she was Indian so every time we had food that had pork in it she had to eat something else. It’s very important to respect everyone’s culture so you will not offend anyone.

Family meal time is very important because it allows everyone to catch up with one another. It allows you to talk about your day and just have that connection and line of communication. I think when it comes to family time there should be no phones and tvs on because They can be distractions. I do agree there’s different types of family times because you can bond over a movie you’re watching. When it comes to family time and eating I feel tvs and phones should be put away.
