I’m working on a writing question and need an explanation to help me understand better.

you will write TWO essays of 2-3 pages each, double spaced in 12-point font with 1-inch margins. If you choose to write more, that is fine. We are grading for content, not length but believe that is will require at least about two pages per question. These essays are longer than those you have written for previous assignments in this class.

Essay Questions, One Required, One your choice of Two.

Required Essay. The Costs and Benefits of Fair Trade. (50 points). Please draw on the book Orla Ryan’s Chocolate Nations: Living and Dying for Cocoa in West Africa, The Barrientos and Bobie report “Promoting Gender Equity in the Cocoa -Chocolate Value Chain,” lectures, and film El Cacao, which you can access through uolibraries main page. Type in title.

In your essay answer the following:

1. What are the challenges of small-scale, family-based cocoa farming? How do “fair trade” and other initiatives address these issues?
2. What part of the total price of “fair trade” goes to farmers and what other costs do they have?
3. What role does government control of cocoa play? How do cocoa buyers compete to get small farmers to sell to them?

• What kind of conditions would you need to see for “fair trade” to truly benefit cocoa farmers through time? Are there other better options? What are they and why might they be better? Be specific: name at least three concrete changes that would benefit cocoa farming families.

In your essay answer the following:

1. What new chocolate processing and manufacturing techniques allowed for the development of mass scale chocolate production?
   • Describe what these inventions were, who invented them, how they work and how they contributed to large-scale chocolate production.
2. What steps did chocolate companies take to ensure access to cacao and sugar?
   • Consider Cadbury, Hershey’s and other specific companies. And the impact those changes had on farmers and workers. Consider workers in Brazil and West Africa.
   • B. The Role of Gender in Marketing, Consumption, and Production of Chocolate. Please draw on “From Romance to PMS: Images of Women and Chocolate in the Twentieth Century, by KB Nutter, Chocolate in the Trenches, Barrientos y Bobie, “Promoting Gender Equality in the Cocoa Chocolate Value Chain.”

In your essay answer the following:

1. How is chocolate consumption gendered in terms of how companies target their advertising? Provide specific examples.
2. How was chocolate consumption influenced by the military and its contracts with chocolate companies? Provide specific examples.
3. In general, do women in Ghana currently have equal access to growing and selling cacao?

• All exam answers must be cited, and you must include a “References Cited” page (one page that includes all references used throughout the entire exam is fine- you do not need to create an additional one for each answer). If you quote from a power point presentation, or closely paraphrase, you must cite it in the text by title and week, e.g. (Chocolate and the Military Masses, week 7 module). All are on Canvas. When you quote from a source we used in class you must cite the author’s last name, year of publication, and SPECIFIC PAGE NUMBER(S) in the text of your answer, for example (Coe and Coe 2013:203).
