  1. Briefly describe a disaster or public health emergency of which you were aware or involved and consider the following. Using the flow chart in chapter 30 of the text (Figure 30-2), talk about the influence (positive or negative) of the media, including social media, at 3 or 4 places in the cycle. Include several different types of media and research in your response.
  2. Share any personal or professional experiences you have had with the media, including social media, during or in preparation for a disaster or public health emergency.

Student#1: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID- 19) is an acute and deadly disease caused by the virus spread by respiratory droplets from an infected person when they cough, sneeze within six feet or touch infected areas. Manifestations include high-grade fever with pneumonia-like symptoms, headache, fatigue, generalized body aches, and flu. No known cure, hence managed by supportive and preventative measures. The disease was declared a Public health emergency by the World Health Organization(WHO) on January 30, 2020, and March 11, 2020, a pandemic related to increased cases and death cases in most parts of the world (Alabdulmonem et al., 2020).
Social media played a significant role in spreading the news around the world about the virus. Information provided helped different leaders and scientists collaborate around the world to coordinate knowledge and research to provide evidence-based recommendations to the health care providers and their communities on ways to curb the pandemic. Different media sources provided different information about the pandemic confusing the public since different leaders in the field provided conflicting information. As a result, more deaths worldwide and delayed research for the best therapy methods experienced. Hence, it the necessary to allow leaders who have specialized in specific areas to be the ones at the forefront to guide the public on the expectation (Venegas-Vera et al., 2020).
As a frontline healthcare worker, there were several instances that the local news channels did show up to gather information on the coronavirus situation at the hospital during the crisis. I noted that media only emphasized how critical and burnt out the healthcare workers were. They would omit the recovery success most of the patients that received care at the hospital received when they reported. However, their emphasis on the employees’ burnout out necessitated the facility leaders to hire more travel staff members to relieve.

Student #2: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus. Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus will experience mild to moderate respiratory illness and recover without requiring special treatment (Coronavirus, n.d.). Older people and those with underlying medical problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer are more likely to develop serious illnesses (Coronavirus, n.d.). The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes, and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face. The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (Coronavirus, n.d.).

Social media can also be effectively used to communicate health information to the general public during a pandemic (Tsao et al., 2021). Emerging infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, almost always result in increased usage and consumption of media of all forms by the general public for information (Tsao et al., 2021). Therefore, social media has a crucial role in people’s perception of disease exposure, resultant decision making, and risk behaviors. As users generate the information on social media, such information can be subjective or inaccurate and frequently includes misinformation and conspiracy theories. Hence, accurate and timely information must be disseminated to the general public about emerging threats, such as SARS-CoV-2 (Tsao et al., 2021).

Sometimes I feel with social media is that they don’t give you the full information. They get the information out to the public, but sometimes I feel it is construed. They want to give you all the negative you don’t hear about those who have recovered from Covid. They give you the number of tested positive and don’t subtract the ones that have recovered.

Student#1: Health Equity: is defined as the absence of unfair and avoidable or remediable differences in health among population groups defined socially, economically, demographically or geographically” (Social determinants of health, 2021). Home equity: is the difference between what you owe on your mortgage and what your home is currently worth.

Health disparities: are preventable differences in the burden of disease, injury, violence, or opportunities to achieve optimal health that are experienced by socially disadvantaged populations. Some populations can have higher rates of cancer, for example, while others might be more likely to be obese or use tobacco.

An example of a health difference that I would not consider a health disparity is when a person is pregnant that changes the course of their life. I work in Labor and delivery in which we care for pregnant patients who are hypertension/ pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetics and so forth while they are with child. These patients come from all walks of life and could easily be categorized by any of the above-mentioned health differences/disparities. Being pregnant may or may not be a health disparity based on the definition, However, we care for the young, old, the poor, all nationalities, and races. One way we reduce health disparity and promote health equity is to ensure our patients get the required medication or education they need. Our patients are also provided with a lactation and postpartum nurses. I know that I am extremely biased, however, I feel the team I get the privilege of working with every day does such a great job of decreasing potential disparities and increasing health equity.

Student #2: “Health equity means ensuring that every person has the opportunity to achieve their best health” (Nall, 2020, para. 02). Many obstacles limit a person’s ability to live a healthy life such as economical conditions, lack of housing, lack of education, and racial discrimination. Health equity means to reduce these obstacles from a person’s life. “Home equity is a homeowner’s interest in a home. It can increase over time if the property value increases or you pay down the mortgage loan balance” (Pritchard, 2020, para. 1). When a group of people experiences a higher burden of mortality or illness than the rest of the individuals, it is called Health disparities. An example of a health difference that I would not consider to be a health disparity is the increased number of deaths resulted from chronic disease in older adults compared to younger people. Older people are at high risk to to get chronic health conditions such as heart disease. Younger people are more likely to recover from an illness due to a strong immune system as compared to older adults.

My work has a translator service available for those who don’t speak English. As nurses, it is our responsibility to make sure that proper education is given to patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is hard to communicate when patients don’t speak English. It is required to given information to the patient in the native language and uses a professional interpreter. Lack of education is one of the obstacles to live a healthy life. Hospitals can work to publish reading materials in the native language of the patient and make sure that pt can demonstrate the instruction given to him during discharge.
