Do you believe that the United s is currently doing all that it should do to reduce global warming It is a fact that the United States is the country with the most responsibility for the global warming in the world as Allen (2009) states it in an article about heat-trapping gases and their negative effects on the environment.

In spite of it, the United States during the Bush administration took voluntary steps for slowing down the negative effects of global warming, not strong mandatory measures to halt it as Revkin (2002) reported in The New York Times. One of the reasons for Bush decision deals with the issue of the requirements set to other developing countries like China and India as Swarns (2002) explains it.

Mandatory measures like switching from traditional energy to clean, renewable energy in a reasonable period of time, and producing green products would halt the negative effects of global warming in relative short period of time. Voluntary measures, as it is obvious to think, won’t be as effective as mandatory measures since many companies involved are worried about the short-term benifits that they are getting in the present system of traditional energy production and consumption. For example, the use of alternatives sources of energy like solar energy should be enforced as a mandatory measure to be implemented as soon as possible.

According to Monga Bay (2006), the United States is acting unethically on global warming. A recent report from June 16, 2009, given by the US Global Change Research Program provides the next key findings about global warming:

“1. Global warming is unequivocal and primarily human-induced.

2. Climate changes are underway in the United States and are projected to grow.

3. Widespread climate-related impacts are occurring now and are expected to increase.

4. Climate change will stress water resources.

5. Crop and livestock production will be increasingly challenged.

6. Coastal areas are at increasing risk from sea-level rise and storm surge.

7. Threats to human health will increase.

8. Climate change will interact with many social and environmental stresses.

9. Thresholds will be crossed, leading to large changes in climate and ecosystems.

10. Future climate change and its impacts depend on choices made today.” (US Global Change Research Program, 2009).

Environment California states the following about global warming:

“The latest climate science tells us that the United States and the world must break its dependence on fossil fuels and transition rapidly to 100 percent clean, renewable energy if we hope to avoid the most catastrophic effects of global warming” (Environment California, 2008).

These are the strong mandatory measures that the United States have to enforce in order to solve the global warming issue. Even though the US Department of State (2009) is optimistic about the measures that the United States has taken for reducing global warming, the current efforts of the United States are not enough.

The United States is worried about the negative impact that mandatory measures might have on the economy, but according to Sanders (2007) there are alternatives to this issue, and the effect on the economy would be less than expected. The Union of Concerned Scientists (2009) agree with Sanders in this respect and makes a call for the urgent need to take strong actions to curb global warming. So the United States should take mandatory measures in order to halt global warming instead of taking voluntary measures that are too weak to solve the problem related to the emission of greenhouse gases.
