Need help with my writing homework on Analysis of The Media Reaction. Write a 500 word paper answering; This media reaction paper is based on the news article which appeared in “Lake County News- Sun”, d “Whether or not ‘Girlfriends’ gets a ninth season, Mara Brock Akil has a game plan” by Janice Rhoshalle LittleJohn on 12-11-2007.
It is about the fate of the long running sitcom ‘Girlfriends’ in its 8th season on CW, which is the 2nd most popular sitcom among black audience. It profiles the Afro American executive producer of the show, Mara Brock Akil who along with Shonda Rhimes is the only black woman producing multiple T.V. shows being aired currently.
It cannot be said that the article explicitly attempted to address the diversity represented in the American Landscape. The article’s focus is more on the fact that Mara Brock, an Afro American woman has managed to achieve this success at such a young age and she has been able to manage this kind of high pressure job with very little experience. The president of CW, Dawn Ostroff is all praises for her involvement and dedication to her job and the way she is handling production of two shows and planning drama and comedy for to keep the show on air for a longer time and get higher viewer count.
What this article does point out is the fact that there are very few entertainment programs showing predominantly Afro American star cast these days. Most of the programs which used to have Afro American cast in the main lead are long over and that the current ones do not reflect this segment of the society that well on the small screen. There is an increasing trend to have ‘colorless’ themes for entertainment on the T.V. shows.
It gives a significant analysis that though out the fact that though there are more colored actors than ever before they are not getting more work as there are no stories depicting representing their culture.
All the segments of the media cannot be accused to relying on stereotypes when depicting a certain group. Stereotypes are more common in movies and TV shows where colored ethnic groups tend to be shown typical image associated with them over successive generations. Print media and articles are very careful in not allowing any bias from entering in their news items and editorials. This could be because it is mainly news focused and cannot take creative liberties under the license of showing a slice of society as is done in motion pictures and TV shows. Print media on the other hand always seems to be looking for and cheering people from ethnic groups who stand apart from the rest.
This particular article does in a way break the mould about a colored career woman, who is reported to be quite capable in managerial role. Considering the fact the she is quoted to be quite confident at beating the ‘Cosby’ show if given a lease for another year shatters the myth about the kind of careers that colored women pursue and heights they can reach.
