Egyptian Art Egyptian civilization is one of the most coveted civilizations of the world and their artistic style is renowned more for its special characteristics. Unlike western art, Egyptians are more precise about their artistic work as it represented their beliefs and cultural practices. The characteristics of Egyptian artistic style are various and unique than that of other parts of world as it symbolizes universe and its intricacies in a deep manner. These can be set down as balance, clarity, perspective, color and uniqueness. Characteristics a) Balance : Balance is a fundamental aspect of Egyptian art and it is due to the fact that they are deeply skilled in their artistic work. Egyptians use abundant mathematical tactics in their art which brings abundant balance to it. The example of balance in Egyptian art can be seen in hieroglyphics artistic representation where there is balance in combination of natural elements of nature like animals, people, natural resources and birds. While constructing pyramids, even the perfection of lines symbolizes balance. The Egyptian artists have given utmost importance to balance in visual presentation of their wall paintings. They even look at exquisite work of the jewelry they place on their art and the symmetry and balance of it is given utmost care and attention. The balance is given importance in Egyptian art because they symbolize the equilibrium of nature and its symmetry in each and every creation. b) Clarity -The artistic work of Egyptian art consistently represented clarity and transparency in its work. The many artistic forms of Egypt were constructed by combining hieroglyphic writings which reflected more clear outcomes. These writings symbolized animals and images which were part of Egyptian culture and belief. They used simple images of human, animals and nature in their paintings and art work in order to convey their message or cultural practices more clearly to the outside world. Even, the sculptors and paintings retained a defined shape which showcased the clarity in their thoughts, idea and expressions. The paintings of Egyptian culture left space between each image in order to magnify their focus and statues also had sharp ridges which enhanced its access points. Moreover, the hieroglyphics artistic representation had horizontal line separating them which makes reading them more perfect. c) Color -Color plays an important role in Egyptian artistic work. The stone art work which we see today in Egypt was once bright in color and vibrant. The color of these were worn out due to harsh heat , rain and continuous exposure to nature for long time. The paints used to color hieroglyphics were exquisite in nature and more of black and red were used to enhance them. The outline carvings and paintings were also decorated with beautiful colors to make it more appealing and outstanding. The jewelry was also colored vividly along with pyramids which were decorated with golden hue. The rich hues of blue, green,red , yellow and brown decorated the art works of Egyptian culture. e) Perspective – Generally, most of the artistic works of Egyptian culture were flat in shape. However they had their own perspective as the pharaoh on throne in a painting has a pharaoh and throne relative in size. Even the line showing the workers offering food to the king also had proper size relativism except the workers were smaller in size. exception to this rule is that royal children were depicted in miniature adult form instead of adult size as it reflected their power and authority in Egyptian culture. A statue showing a queen holding a baby, actually has a miniature adult in her lap. d) Uniqueness-The Egyptian art when compared with other artistic forms is the most unique one in nature. It has outstanding color combination, accuracy, balance, vibrancy and symmetry. These art forms were mainly constructed with mud and stone and still stand as the most outstanding art work of all times. The mystery factor involved also makes it more unique and an out of the world experience. Examples a) Balance –. An obelisk positioned tomb on perfect stone between two huge pharaohs represents a right example of a balanced Egyptian art b) Clarity – The clarity of art work of Egypt is obvious in outlines and shapes of statues and sculptors. c) Color- The shimmering golden, blue , red and green color used on statues are the example of the characteristic value of color in Egyptian art. d)Perspective – The perspective of the art of Egypt is pointed out in the statue of Sphinx with Lion head which conveys the idea of royalty and ferociousness of the Kings of the valley.
