BUS 221 EGCC Pertinent and Non Pertinent Interview Question & Responses
2-3 paragraph response. Imagine a job and then an interview question for applicants that would not be pertinent and one that would be pertinent. State each one, and why they are important to know.
First peer below
For example, let’s say the interviewer is interviewing Bob for a job at a school as a teacher. The interviewer asks bob a series of questions such as; what’s your employment background, do you have a teaching license, criminal background if any and what is your interest working at that school. These questions are considered pertinent, meaning relevant to the job.
Another example, let’s say an interviewer is interviewing Sally for a computer tech. job. The interviewer asks sally a series of questions as the following; what’s your favorite color, do you have any pets, do you have kids and what’s the color of your car. These questions are considered not pertinent, meaning not relevant to the job.
It’s important to know the difference between these two. When being a person that is being interviewed because, in an interview you shouldn’t be asked personal questions as listed above as not pertinent and is not relevant to the job.
Second peer post
JOB: DMV branch office processing technician.
Pertinent question: Explain your organizational process and what steps you take to ensure all your work is completed efficiently and accurately.
Non-pertinent question: Imagine you are a large music festival like Lalapalooza or Coachella and a disagreement or argument begins amongst some fellow concert goers. What do you do?
The pertinent question is directly related to the candidate’s organizational skills, how they manage their time and what their process is to make sure their work is done in a timely manner while also making sure it is done correctly. This is important for the hiring manager to know because this will impact the atmosphere of the workplace as well as the work flow. DMV is directly responsible for driving privileges which can affect someone’s ability to work and earn a living. The person hiring needs to know that the candidate will handle the work flow and get those drivers licenses processed.
The non-pertinent question might give some good insight to how the candidate handles tense situations, particularly where large crowds and strangers are involved. Do they put their hands up and say “not my monkeys, not my circus” and leave it for the security to handle? Or do they attempt to diffuse the situation and redirect the attention of the angry individuals to enjoying the event? This not only gives the hiring manager some insight to the candidates feeling of personal responsibility but also their ability to handle angry people (which could come in handy at the DMV).
