Information:

Companies around the world continue to be affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus), still battling to shift from individual company performance to the extended organisational supply chain activities that meet stakeholder requirements, including product availability, on-time delivery, and all the necessary inventory and capacity in the supply chain to deliver that performance in a responsive manner. Millions are displaced regionally and globally due to cautionary guidelines and travel restrictions. Global routes of all forms of transportation are temporarily disrupted for both businesses and everyday commuters

A pandemic outbreak of this magnitude has caught companies and whole industries off guard, with a shockwave of ripple effects tearing through their Supply Chain Performance and company boundaries since it includes basic materials, components, subassemblies and finished products, and distribution through various channels to the end customer. This also crosses traditional functional organization lines such as procurement, manufacturing, distribution, marketing & sales, and research & development. To win in the ‘new-normal’ environment, supply chains need continuous improvement and measurement of global Supply Chain Performance.

There are a number of supply chain performance metrics that are expressly designed to support and monitor Supply Chain Performance improvements across the supply chain but, some supply chain management professionals think that they should only consider cost reduction when measuring their organisation’s supply chain’s effectiveness, efficiency and adaptiveness planning for this sudden disruption. Supply chain cost reduction is important in reducing the cost of goods sold (COGS) and increasing profits. Therefore, it is the only metric that companies should consider in measuring the performance of their supply chains and others should be ignored.
