Question: In your first leadership course of the program, LDR-600, you learned about leadership and vocation. One of your readings, “Leadership as a Vocation,” has been included again in this course for quick reference. As you review the topic Resources and reflect on your experience within the program, how has your understanding of leadership as a vocation changed? How do your skills and dispositions demonstrate leadership as your vocation?

Answer: Reflecting back on LDR-600 and the understanding of leadership as it reflects to vocation now is that the more important part of an individual’s life and as it refers to leadership is that it’s not all about the position of leadership. It’s about the better good that is done while being a leader in an organization such as compassion, helping others, having a selfless heart. Leadership is the act of guiding a team or individual to achieve a certain goal through direction and motivation. Leaders encourage others to take the actions they need to succeed. To be a great leader, it is necessary to learn and cultivate the skills it takes to be effective. Just like vocation is a calling, in my opinion, leadership feels the same way because everyone can’t be a leader. In my current career making sure that patients have approvals for surgeries that are needed, I have to work with the insurance companies to make sure they get that important information needed for approval. Not everyone has the patience or time to sit and read through a patient’s clinicals and write down information that the insurance company is looking for to get that authorization. The times when I can’t get the approval I feel bad for the patient like I didn’t do my best work for them. But overall, it’s not that some insurance companies have strict rules, it makes it difficult sometimes to get what is needed for a patient.
