Write an essay between 800 and 1200 words (excluding references), consisting of two tasks:
1. Read the article in Journal of Economic Perspectives, “From Efficient Markets Theory to Behavioral
Finance,” (published in winter 2003 by Robert Shiller). Explain the efficient market hypothesis and the
weakness of Efficient Market Hypothesis (approximately 300 to 500 words).
2. In the end of the paper, Shiller states the following:
“Indeed, we have to distance ourselves from the presumption that financial markets always work well and that
price changes always reflect genuine information.”
Discuss how Shiller reached this conclusion and your view on this statement (approximately 500 to 700 words).
Criteria and Marking:
The total mark for this assignment is 30, which consists of the following criteria:
Explanation of EMH (3 marks)
Discussion of the EMH weakness (4
marks)
Discussion of Shiller view (5 marks)
Discussion of your view (8 marks)
Structure (5 marks)
Presentation (2 marks)
Reference (3 marks)
In the Structure criterion, your writing style, essay flow and grammar/spelling will be examined. The
Presentation criterion includes various details such as document format, identification and compliance of word
limit. In addition, there are some general points to consider:
Your essay must have a cover page detailing your ID and word count.
Remember to give a total word count (excluding references) on the cover page.
You cannot use any bullet points in explanation or summary.
Any reference style is allowed, but it must be consistent (i.e. same style throughout the essay).
If graphs/figures are used, remember to quote the source.
Use academic writing style and not creative writing style.
Do not plagiarize! It will be dealt with very seriously in UQ and is simply not worth trying.

Each individual should submit a Word or PDF file through the Blackboard course website (click the
Assessment button on the left). Submission through email will not be accepted. All submissions will be run
through the Turnitin anti-plagiarism software.
