VEHICLE THEFT?
In most “stolen-vehicle” cases the reporter/victim reports his/her vehicle stolen in order to make a claim on his or her auto insurance to recover the loss.  In some instances, the vehicle is never recovered; however, there are many stolen vehicles that are recovered.
You are investigating a reported auto theft.  The victim reported that he parked his $70,000 BMW X6 in the parking lot at Dadeland Mall at approximately 1:00 p.m. to meet a friend for lunch, and upon his return, 2 hours later, the vehicle was missing.  He stated he distinctly remembers locking the vehicle before he left and still had his car key/fob in his possession.  The victim purchased the vehicle six months prior to the theft.  He works as a store manager at Best Buy and rents an apartment at Pearl Dadeland.
As the investigator, what are some methods you would employ to determine what happened and whether or not the vehicle was actually stolen or the reporter made a false report?
