                               Final Paper: Workplace Challenge
 
 
The Final Paper: Workplace Challenge will be a 3-5 page typed, double-spaced document that will be due to the instructor via email on April 28.
 
Your assignment will be to select a “public relations challenge” at your organization or another organization of your choice and construct a formal, internal “White Paper” to explore the challenge, dissect it, and recommend a “position” and “key messages” that might be adopted to deal with it.
 
The public relations challenge itself can be anything you deem appropriate; from an organizational challenge at your place of business to a challenge that confronts a local organization to an issue that has national implications.  The best approach, though, is to choose an issue with which you are involved in real life.
 
The White Paper should be written as an internal document to be shared with top management, i.e. by proxy, your friendly instructor, to help it decide on an important course of action. The basic question that the White Paper should answer is: How can we enhance the reputation of this entity? 
 
 
The White Paper must be divided into the following four parts: 
 

  1. Background – a brief section, in which you research and describe the pertinent historical perspective that has brought the organization to its current state. This will allow you the context for the decisions reached later in the paper.

 

  1. Statement of the challenge – a simple statement in which you designate clearly, the challenge that confronts the entity, to which your own solutions will apply.

 

  1. Alternative solutions             –   in which you briefly list the pros and cons of alternative paths the entity might take to deal with its challenge.  (Hint: The first alternative, as we have discussed in class, is always “Do nothing.”)

 

  1. Blueprint and “key messages” for action    –           in which you first, describe your solution and the action plan of “next steps” that the entity should embrace to implement it; and second, list the several key messages  — spell them out! — that will help you ultimately to attain the desired public relations result

 
Papers will be evaluated, i.e. graded, according to thoughtfulness of arguments presented, soundness of the solution recommended, and persuasiveness of the blueprint and messages proposed.
 
Again, the topic is up to you. But…….the most useful paper would be one that discusses a real-life challenge with which an organization close to you has been confronted. Ideally, the perceptive solutions that you recommend in the White Paper could be used in real life.
