Paper #3: Research-Based Position
Assignment Overview
The instructor will devise a specific rhetorical situation in which each
student will be required to identify a specific issue that calls for
sustained, research-based argumentation.  The rhetorical situation
should include either inherent or explicitly outlined parameters for
topic selection that will prevent the type of free-for-all in which
students end up with topics that are vague, overdone, or difficult for
students to approach in an unbiased way.
Students will be required to develop a specific thesis and
organize a sustained argument.  They will be required to find their
source material, partly by using library databases, and at least one of
their sources must be a peer-reviewed academic article.
You must focus your paper on the topic of “local communities” and
identify problems that those communities might face.
