In this 1-2 page paper, identify a product, process, space, or service that is designed in a way
that, by not taking gender differences into account, ends up excluding, inconveniencing, or
disadvantaging women. Your discussion should be inspired by Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisible
Women, but you may not repeat an example from her book.
For instance, Criado Perez describes how the order in which cities sweep their streets is often
designed with male driving patterns in mind. Can you think of other examples of services or
processes that are designed in a way that ignores or disadvantages women? Criado Perez
describes how cockpits, cellphones, and air bags, among other things, are designed for typical
male users, to the detriment of female users. What other things or spaces are designed in ways
that don’t work, or don’t work as well, for women? Be creative. Feel free to do some online
research to come up with an example or flesh out what you know about a subject.
Your paper should:
1. Describe the product, space, service, or process you’re discussing. Tell the reader a bit
about it so we can understand the points you’re going to make about it.
2. Explain what sort of gender differences this design fails to consider (e.g., the shape of
women’s bodies, their priorities or responsibilities, the way they use a particular object),
and how that ends up disadvantaging women or privileging men.
3. Suggest steps or changes to correct for the problems you outline above. This could mean
offering an alternative design, or just suggestions studies that could be done, or questions
that need to be asked, in order to figure out a better way.

• On the first page (and only on the first page) at the top, single-spaced, include your name,
the course number (AMST 320), and my name.
• Include page numbers. Seriously, it drives me crazy when you don’t.
• First person voice (“I”) is perfectly fine for this paper.
• PROOFREAD CAREFULLY for standard use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
• You may include a bibliography, but you are not required to do so.
