Why do anthropologists (and others) care about whether languages become extinct (i.e., the last remaining speaker of the language dies)?  How important is it to try to preserve these languages?  Wouldn’t it be more “convenient” if everyone spoke the same language … especially since a substantial majority of what’s on the internet is in English (or at least, a simplified version that some linguists have referred to as “Globish”).  What would be gained if this were to happen, and what would be lost?
