Homage to Catalonia Essay

These are the passages you should focus on when you write your essay. You can of course look at other parts of the book and quote from other parts of the book, but the passages below contain much of the information you’ll need to complete your essay:

Before you start writing: Brainstorm about what is going on in these passages (and chapters). What is Orwell learning about the atmosphere in Spain at these different times of his stay? What are the characteristics and behaviors of the people in Barcelona and on the front at these times? How does Orwell relate to the mood (and how it changes)? What do we learn about Orwell’s political allegiances?
In addition to these questions, also consider how Orwell’s political commitments inform the tone of Homage to Catalonia and his word choice throughout.
Write Your Essay:
In a well-structured essay, present an exploration of the general mood Orwell encounters when he first arrives in Spain and how that mood changes during the time he is there. How do Orwell’s thoughts about the war and its chances for success also change as the months pass? Be sure to describe the characteristics and behaviors of the people, and the soldiers, at various stages during Orwell’s time in Spain. When explaining the characteristics and behaviors of the people Orwell interacts with, explore his word choice and the tone Orwell achieves through his writing. What can we learn about Orwell and his political commitments from the way he shares information?
Make sure the essay is broken up into paragraphs (reminder: no extra spaces between paragraphs). The essay should have multiple paragraphs, including a final paragraph that brings your ideas to a logical conclusion.
You don’t need a work cited page. We will discuss how to use signal phrases, quotation marks, and parenthetical references correctly next week.
