For this discussion, read Chapter 7 Program Objectives and Setting in the course text. It is important to differentiate between goals and objectives. A goal is a general, overarching expression of what the program wants to achieve; whereas, an objective is specific, measurable, time-bound and doable. Both goals and objectives are directly linked to the problem statement.

Goal:

We will install traffic lights in the city of San Diego next year. (General)

Objective:

We will install 150 traffic lights in zip codes 92154, 92123, and 92133 between December 2014 and December 2015. (Specific, measurable, and time-bound)

Characteristics of a statement that refers to objectives:

  • Describes problem-related, desirable outcomes of your intervention.
  • Does not describe your methods.
  • Refers to the population served.
  • States the time when the objectives will be met.
  • Describes the objectives in numerical terms, if at all possible (Kiritz, 2004).

so this is what a class mate did for discussion 2 that says read chapter 7 her focus is on preterm labor

Infants born before 37 weeks of gestation are considered to be premature. The excessive medical cost to keep an infant born prematurely alive is crippling to most families and that is often just the beginning of their medical debt. These infants have a higher risk of infections, developmental problems, breathing problems, and other chronic conditions or impairments that can require treatment for the rest of that child’s life. Preterm births are more common in some racial/ethnic groups such as African Americans. Because there is no known cause for premature births and research has many ethical barriers, the most important aspect of care for at risk mothers is education and as much prevention as possible. Strategies to reduce preterm births include promoting adequate birth spacing, helping women quit behaviors that put them at higher risk for early delivery, and providing high-quality medical care for women during pregnancy.

The women most at risk for preterm deliveries are African American women with low socioeconomic status that do not seek early prenatal care and are uneducated about premature births.

Goal: To inform women of low socioeconomic status in St. Louis Missouri where they can receive low-cost prenatal care by next year.

Objective: To have information packets displayed with the pregnancy test for women to take at all stores selling or distributing pregnancy tests (42 locations) within St. Louis City County in St. Louis, Missouri by 2022. Information packets will contain contact information of all local facilities that provide no cost or affordable prenatal care and an overview of the importance of prenatal care.
