FSU Health and Medical Discussion
Today, we use blood tests to penetrate the “black box” of the human body to measure how it works on the inside. The ancients did not have the scientific luxury to do so. Instead, they considered the human body to be made from four humors (liquids): blood, phlegm, nile, and black bile. These humors are in constant exchange with each other in the body depending on the seasons, the individual constitution, the age, and the diet of the patient. Read chapter 7 of the Hippocratic treatise On Nature of Man. What do you think is medically progressive in the theory of the four humors? What does modern blood tests miss that the ancient theory of the four humors explained clearly?
