In April 2014, Flint’s drinking water was switched from the Great Lakes’ Huron to the Flint River resulting in toxic levels of lead exposure (Ruckhart et al., 2019). There were no corrosion control treatments in the water distribution pipes, causing them to corrode and leak and other contaminants into the drinking water (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Although the drinking water was switched back to the original water system in October 2015, the damage had been done, and it took two years for a federal emergency to be declared (Ruckhart et al., 2019).). The most concerning public health issue was lead exposure in children. According to Lockhart et al., 2019, lead exposure in children can damage the nervous system, slow growth and development, and learning, behaviors, hearing, and speech problems.
