One of the causes for increased healthcare expenditures is high numbers of preventable chronic diseases. If preventative health policy can focus on ways to decrease the occurrence of preventable illnesses from occurring both improved health and decreased healthcare costs will result. The advanced practice nurse can promote health and prevent disease on a national and global level by advocation. Raingruber (2017) stresses how nurses must not only advocate for their patients but for their profession. The advanced practice nurse knows how time spent with his or her patients is essential from not only proper diagnosis but to deliver effective treatment and good care. Nurse staffing issues are a problem that prevents healthcare providers from doing so. Wang et al. (2020) explains that nurse staffing is the most important factor impacting patient outcomes. There is an increased risk for falls and deaths of patients when there is insufficient nurse staffing. Nurses must protect not only their patients but their licenses and professions by advocating for health policy regarding nurse staffing. National policies regulating nurse staffing will promote health and prevent disease because nurses will be able to properly care for their patients and spend the time educating them on how to improve their health which will ultimately prevent them from developing avoidable illnesses.

Public and private divisions can improve the coordination and collaboration of developing prevention-oriented health polices by eliminating health disparities. No population should shoulder a disproportionate burden of illness and disease. Advance practice nurses have a pivotal role to promote health and prevent diseases at a national and global level. As health care providers they can empower people to make reasonable, informed, and healthy choices. They can provide people with information and encourage education to independently manage their health. Kleinpell et. al (2020) state that a national collaborative has proven that advance practice nurses lead innovative programs that promote high-value care, by promoting best clinical practices, institution wide changes, and sharing improved protocols and quality measures (p.636). Advance practice nurse are strong, innovative, financially savvy, and willing to take on increasingly difficult and complex situations. They provide vital support by supporting flexibility and agility as employees respond to the constantly changing global healthcare market (Edmonson, et. al (2017). They professional leaders, policy makers, and active in their community and workplaces. Their profession allows them to impact polices worldwide.
