Guidelines

·You must write essays for both questions. You will write two essays total.

·Each essay should be 300-500 words

·Please use course materials (textbook, Johnson’s Reading the American Past, and powerpoints) as sources to help you write your essays.  You may NOT use outside books, websites, or other sources.

Writing Guidelines:

·1-inch margins, Times New Roman, 12-pt font, double-spacing, Word Docx format

Essay 1

“Race,” one scholar writes, “stands as a central feature of American history from initial contact between Europeans, Africans, and indigenous peoples to the Civil War and Reconstruction.”

Write an essay that agrees with, contests, or modifies this scholar’s claim.  In your essay, you must use at least one example from before and/or during the American Revolution, and one example from after the Revolution.

Essay 2

What is the role of gender in American history from c. 1500-1877?  In your essay, you must use at least one example from before and/or during the American Revolution, and one example from after the Revolution.
