Immigration policy has become a polarizing issue in the US. The current multi-faceted debate focuses on undocumented illegal immigrants crossing our southern border and how this impacts our national security. With that in mind, a weakness in our border security, broken immigration policies, and mass immigration movements across the globe due to terrorist threats have triggered the need to build a wall along our southern border.
Write an individual APA pro/con essay in Word only on the following question:
Should the US Continue to Build a Wall along the US/Mexico Border?

PRO/CON RUBRIC
All students are required to write a 1000-1200 word pro/con essay on “Should the US Continue to Build a Wall along the US/Mexico Border?” (Approx. 4 pages 12 pt. Times Roman – double spaced, APA).
Title page and Works cited pages do not count toward the word count.
- APA Research must only be based on the following 16 citations. No citation may be repeated.
- 8 citations for the PRO and 8 different citations for the CON
- (1) peer-reviewed scholarly article
- (1) academic books (published within the last two years) can also be an eBook
- (1) academic journal
- (2) government report/data (this is from a site that ends in .gov)
- (3) any major newspaper or digital TV news or periodical article (such as: FOX, CNN, NBC, CBS, BBC etc …, Youtube video from an interest group, foundation, documentary, Time, Newsweek, NYT, etc,,,). Any combination of these are fine for a total of 3 in this area.
The essay must have a title page and a works cited page and must have the following six headers for each paragraph in the body of the paper: (these do not count toward the Word count.)
- Introduction (approx.100- 200 words)
- Introduce your topic and review and summarize the major reasoning of the arguments and evidence on both sides.
- No thesis statement is used in a pro/con essay.
- Do not use the word I – (I think, I believe, I agree). This is not an opinion paper.
(4) Main body consists of four paragraphs with headers (approx.150 words per paragraph)
- Each argument you present must be what an expert has reported.
- Each counter argument must be what an expert has reported.
- This is a factual PRO/CON essay based on what experts have stated – not you
PRO #1 – PRO#2 (Total 8 citations – essentially one citation for each argument/example)
- The first two paragraphs present the position in favor of the issue. Two arguments and two examples are used in each pro position paragraph.
- You must identify arguments ( made by experts) and examples (from the news or documents) in favor of the position in your pro paragraphs (one in-text citation for each argument and example for a total of four citations per PRO paragraph)
- In other words – Each PRO paragraph – 1st position with citation, example supporting the 1st argument with citation. 2nd argument with citation and example supporting that 2nd argument with citation. Each paragraph has four citations
- There are a total of 4 arguments and 4 examples in the PRO paragraphs.
CON #1 CON #2 (Total 8 citations – essentially one citation for each argument/example)
- The next two paragraphs present the counter argument against the position. Two counter arguments and two examples are used in each CON paragraphs.
- You will write a counter argument ( made by experts) and present examples (from the news or documents) countering the position in the pro paragraphs (one in-text citation for each argument and example for a total of four citations per CON paragraph)
- In other words – Each CON paragraph – 1st Counter argument with citation, and example with citation counter argues the 1st argument in the PRO paragraph. 2nd counter argument with citation and example counter argues the 2nd argument in the PRO paragraph. Each paragraph has four citations
- There are a total of 4 counter arguments and 4 examples in the CON paragraphs made in the same order as presented in the PRO paragraphs.
- Conclusion paragraph – give a balanced review or summary that synthesizes and evaluates the merits of both sides (approx.300 words).
