Consider the following scenario:

Bryon is in recovery from alcohol addiction, and he has recently been assigned to your caseload. You and Bryon have established an objective for Bryon’s service plan. The objective states that he will attend weekly Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at a local church. However, in talking further, you realize that Bryon does not have reliable transportation to meet this objective. He also happens to live in a community where liquor stores outnumber supermarkets.

Sociocultural aspects—a person’s ethnicity and culture, social support, education, gender, financial stability, housing and living situation, religious values, and more—can impact case management, including how you work with the service user. They may also present benefits or barriers to service plan goals.

For this Assignment, you identify the sociocultural factors for your fictional service user that may impact the service plan.

• Review all available information on your selected service user in Hart City.

Submit a 1- to 2-page paper in which you complete the following:

• Describe the sociocultural factors for your selected service user. In what ways might these be relevant to the case management relationship and the service plan?
• Identify and describe barriers that may prevent the service user from achieving the goals and objectives of the service plan. These barriers could relate to transportation challenges, lack of family support, stigma, medical insurance, limited income, etc. 
• Why do you consider these to be barriers?

FEMALE SPEAKER: You might think I’m comfortable living here, eating with my neighbors, getting nursing help, playing games, but I’m also bored as hell. I’d like to work again in the community, maybe even at a university. I was happiest when I was teaching. But who would hire me? The diabetes is doing a number on my eyes. So I can’t see all that well.

I’m sober now, have been since I moved here. But I’m also in my 50s and spent that time in psychiatric hospitals. I don’t think anyone from the college would give me a reference because of how it ended. I could look for something else. If I’m not teaching, though, what am I doing? If I applied for maybe a retail position or an admin assistant, they’d probably just say, well, she’s overqualified and toss the application. I’m not sure what to do. 

Here is week 3 update on Georgia

Georgia has started working a temporary position at a local florist, where she gets to chat with customers and do something creative. She is able to take frequent breaks and rest her eyes. In an offhand comment, she mentions that she is now making slightly over the threshold for disability social security assistance. However, she hasn’t told the disability office because she doesn’t want to give up the job or the disability income. Are you ethically obligated to contact the state disability office and disclose this information? How would you address this situation with Georgia?
