Assignment 1: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected each of us in a multitude of ways and will continue to do so for some time. As the virus has rampaged through our nations, communities, schools, and homes we have experienced an historic level of physical isolation. In some cases, that isolation has developed into social isolation leading to despair. In other cases, individuals have overcome the physical barriers that have been forced upon them by participating more fully in virtual platforms. As humans are social creatures with needs that cannot be met in solitude this time has allowed social scientists to investigate more fully how physical isolation and social interaction interact with age, race, socioeconomic status, etc. to inform loneliness and despair – or, on the flipside, happiness. You were assigned a reading from the 2021 World Happiness Report entitled “Social Connection and Well-Being during COVID-19.” It is available under the readings and videos tab in blackboard. In this chapter, the authors share various findings from studies performed during the early months of the COVID-19 restrictions. I would like you to write a brief summary of the chapter. Then, please use your sociological imagination to consider why the research found what it found and whether you think the findings are accurate based on what you experienced during those first difficult months. Use the terms you learned in Chapter 5 of the text. You do not need to include a works cited page unless you use sources outside the textbook and the chapter assigned from the 2021 World Happiness Report. For in-text citations you may use (GIB, pg.) or (Happiness, pg.). Your assignment should be three pages long, double-spaced, 12- font. Your name and an appropriate title (NOT just “assignment 1”) should be on the first page.
