- Jennifer : Define “community counseling” as discussed beginning on page 9 of the text and include the concepts of community, multicultural competence, social justice, and the healthy development of clients and communities
The community counseling model discussed in this book can be summarized as follows: Community counseling is a comprehensive assisting framework based on multicultural competence and is also aimed at social justice. Because context has such a strong influence on human behavior, community counselors employ tactics that promote the healthy development of both their clients and the communities that support them. We define community in this book as “a group or gathering of people who share common interests and needs” (Paisley, 1996). A revolutionary force definitely has been the focus of the counseling profession in the multi-cultural counselling movement. This force is creating a paradigm shift in which cultural constructs are enlarged to encompass culture respectful and responsive ways of thinking, such as mental health, psychological maturity, development, psychological disorder, and adequate aid solutions. When it comes to social justice, community counselors use the wide-angle lens to examine their customers in context, they have every reason to recognize that their clients require and deserve a fair and equitable community environment. Human development is a process to broaden the choice of people. The expansion of human capacities and functions will help to enlarge people’s choices.
- Why is the community counseling model important to mental health professionals?
Community counseling is wide-range and diverse, applying guiding and social work ideas in a Community environment. Efficient community advice helps customers address their mental health difficulties and helps prevent such worries from spreading throughout the community. The idea of community counseling is based on the recognition of variety, according to Judith A. Lewis and others. Lewis adds that community advocates must pay particular attention to diversity as communities are varied systems in their essence. By treating the whole of a community, counselors can contribute to a large-scale alleviation of mental health problems. Community advice provides leadership in improving access to mental health care. Community advice continues to increase its reach to address these needs.
- How does the community counseling model tie the services provided by the counselor to the client’s environment?
Given that individual growth and community development are intricately related, community consultants recognize that their professional obligations encompass both direct service to their customers and the development of health care environments. The function of the consultant therefore involves strategies for personal development and strategies for community development. The consultant utilizes focussed methods across both these categories that meet the requirements and broader strategies affecting the general public of particular persons or organizations.

Community counseling is known as a comprehensive helping framework that is grounded in multicultural competence and oriented toward social justice. Meaning not only is it multicultural and working with a diverse group of people the main goal is to bring forth social justice or helping others. Examples of this would be opening a safe space where teens in an underprivileged part of town can explore creatively and without fear. Human behavior is powerfully affected by context. Meaning if the person feels that have a safe haven to go to, they are more likely to open up and accept the help in the first place. Community counselors must use strategies that help facilitate the development of both of the clients and the communities that nourish them. This would be an ideal setting for both the client and the therapist alike. The definition of community counseling has many keywords the definition of these include community which is defined as a group or gathering of people who share common interests and need. multicultural competence which includes a more culturally respectful and responsive ways of thinking towards those of a different background meaning race, age, gender, or ethnicity. Social justice involves promoting access and equity to ensure full participation in the life of a society, particularly for those who have been systematically excluded based on race/ethnicity, gender, age, physical or mental disability, education, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics of background or group membership.
I believe community counseling model is very important to mental health professionals because it shows a humane side to what we do in the sense that we may not be fully aware of the diverse population we work with until we put in those situations. It is also important to see how people if different socially diverse backgrounds, socioeconomics groups, age, and gender deal with issues that the counselors may have not had to face before. The community counseling model ties the services provided by the counselor to the client’s environment by following human development and behavior to take place in an environment that have the potential to be nurturing and/or limiting. Meaning that even in the face of stress, the person is treated respectfully and can demonstrate surprising levels of strength by the client.
