  1. part 3.As we move into the IAG analysis worksheet, you may have noticed that identifying a target audience affects many of your choices as a writer. In continuation of your Synthesis Essay from the AB project where you discussed the potential leading candidate for the advocacy letter, how has your idea of selecting the target audience changed/progressed? What is helping/helps you narrow the scope of your target audience? What still challenges you? For last but not least, how has your previous understanding of the audience in your general writing changed through writing activities in this course? My issue is the extensive amount of homework and self-paced work assigned to high school students across the state. With rigorous courseloads, students spend hours a night completing homework without necessarily learning (Chaya 298). Much of this work is self-paced and takes away personal time that students might otherwise spend sleeping, working, participating in extracurriculars, etc. (Teenager Therapy 4:33). It is difficult to maintain health and well-being, especially mental health, without a clear break from school responsibilities.

This issue is exacerbated by the virtual learning environment necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. When all learning is virtual, students face the challenge of self-teaching and self-motivating. They also face burnout when not provided with a break from this self-paced work.

In my letter, I plan to cite research showing no demonstrable effect of homework on student acheivement and research showing negative effects of homework on student mental health. I will also reference the changes in some school districts’ homework policies, such as the limits that Fairfax County Public Schools suggest teachers should place on the amount of homework assigned per student per class block. They caution that the nightly homework of a high school student should not exceed two hours’ time commitment.

I plan to address my letter to the Superintendent of the Virginia Department of Education.

I look forward to hearing your feedback. I think that it would help my argument if I could find a specific piece of legislation or public discourse from the past month or two that relates to my research, because it would provide a framework for my letter. I will need to do deeper research about the current homework policies and practices across the state, but I am confident from personal experience, anecdotal experience, and research that a limit on the amount of nightly homework given to high school students will give students the flexibility to pursue personal development and maintain high standards of learning.

The research question I chose is ‘Are age under 18 children protected in the social media world in the 21st century?’ The research question may look vague and broad, but actually, it is talking about the age limit of social media. Why social media itself should be limited to children. Now social media is essential in people’s life which means everyone uses social media. “In general, young people are more likely to use social media than older people. (Ortiz-Ospina, 2019)” Not only children but adults also use social media. Since social media is for everyone, the media is for everyone. Therefore, adult media can be shown to children. Then, children are unintentionally exposed to adult media. Since more children are using social media for a long time, they are more exposed to the adult world. On the other hand, “Facebook and photo-sharing site Instagram both require users to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account, and in some jurisdictions, this age limit may be higher. (Harper, 2020)” Social media has an age limit, and they are protecting children from media that do not fit children. However, is that limitation enough? No. Usually, the age limit is 12 or 13. “At around age 12, biologically, most kids have not developed robust enough cognitive functions for impulse control or ethical thinking (Gruenewald, 2017).” Also, “Excessive screen media use and social media use is linked to several risks for children and adolescents, including obesity, lower psychological wellbeing, decreased happiness, decreased quality of sleep, increased risk of depression, and increases in suicide-related outcomes such as suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts (Hurt, 2021).” Therefore, I will appeal to the government to make the restrictions stronger because social media is easy for children to access. If this situation sustains this can affect children in several bad ways.
