Now, we will discuss logical fallacies, which are FLAWS in one’s logic.

There are countless fallacies, so, you don’t need to know them all. Just know that most fallacies involve one or more of the following….

Stereotyping, distracting from the main topic, making assumptions, generalizing, making connections where there aren’t any, exaggerating, as in “being extra,” distorting, dramatizing! ASSIGNMENT ONE: read fallacies on pages 414-416 in the Norton textbook.

ASSIGNMENT TWO: Write your own two fallacy statements, but don’t say which ones they are. For example, you might write, “Oh, no, I got a 10 on my 20 point assignment. My self-esteem will now decrease, and I’ll start getting bad grades. Next thing, I’ll fail this class, and it’ll bring my GPA down. Then, I won’t be able to transfer to any university, and I will end up not doing anything with my life!” (That is a slippery slope, btw.)

ASSIGNMENT THREE: Try to figure out someone else’s fallacies, and say why you have guessed that particular one.

ASSIGNMENT FOUR: Write back to the “guesser,” “the figure-outer” of your fallacies, and tell them if they are right, and, if wrong, which fallacy it actually is.
