Analyzing film is similar to analyzing a story, in the sense that you examine it closely in order to identify important elements, themes, and issues it presents. However, analyzing a movie goes far beyond just listening to the words the characters are speaking and pulling out interesting quotes. As you have probably noticed, things like sound, color, and camera angles influence how you respond to a movie scene. This lesson is designed to introduce you to some basic terms and ideas that will help you analyze the non-verbal parts of a movie scene, so that you can identify and explain what makes certain movie scenes so impactful.

the assignment is below

Choose one of the six shots from Buck and the Preacher below and write a discussion post that analyzes that shot using at least five (or more) of Gianetti’s 15 mise-en-scène elements referenced in the video list (shown at 9:38 and again at the end of the video). In your post, you should identify each element that you are looking at, describe how that element appears in that shot, and explain how it influences your interpretation of the characters or action in this shot. Your post may be in the format of a paragraph or a series of bullet points with detailed descriptions in them for each element. I will be grading you based on the detail in your analysis and your ability to use the vocabulary introduced in the video above.
