Pitt Community College Outdoor Science Activity Case Discussion
Need help with my Social Science question – I’m studying for my class.
Setting: Outdoor play area. Inge, a student teacher in an urban public school preschool, is about to present an outdoor science activity.
Inge has planned an exciting outdoor science activity. After turning in her lesson plan, securing her cooperating teachers approval, and collecting her visuals at a local creek, she takes a group of three-and-a-half-year-olds to a shaded, grassy area outdoors.
She has prepared a small table and a covered tub with air holes. Children’s paint aprons are waiting on a chair. At this time of day, other mixed-age classes are using the play yard. Inge gathers her group of seven children and tells them she has a surprise in the tub, but they are to put on paint aprons first. The group stands around the tub. Inge has children guess what is in the tub. Then with a flourishing “Ta Da,” she removes the cover. Small creek frogs start to jump from the tub. Pandemonium and panic break out immediately. Some children run away screaming. Other children in the yard approach and crowd around the tub, delighted with the frogs. Inge tries to assure the children left in her group that the small frogs will not hurt them. Other teachers in the yard come to help.
