Protecting U.S. critical infrastructures has been a priority for public officials long before the events of September 11, 2001. During the Cold War (Links to an external site.), U.S. officials recognized threats of possible attacks and created initiatives to prepare for these possibilities. Officials at the time identified critical infrastructure assets as power plants and grids, oil and gas pipelines and other critical facilities that, if harmed, might affect continuity of government and services. Today, critical infrastructure protection is the cornerstone of homeland security.
