Select a company with an international presence that you are familiar with or by searching the internet. Identify the laws, treaties, acts, and governing bodies (e.g. U.N., WTO, and IMF) that impact their business. Explain the impact these laws, treaties, acts, and governing bodies have on their business. Differentiate it with their business in the United States.

“In the 1970’s Nestle had made an agreement with hospitals in third world countries like Africa to provide their formula to the infants in their care. The mothers were no longer able to breast feed their babies and were forced to feed the child nestle formula, to save money the mothers would also dilute the formula with unclean water. This caused extreme malnutrition and thousands of babies died. Nestle sat in front of a congressional board and tried to show that they did nothing wrong, but the congressional board thankfully saw differently.

Today food companies may not promote their products in hospitals, provide free samples to mothers, or provide misleading information. So much came from the deaths of these innocent children. Nestle now has a campaign for clean drinking water. 50 years later and they are still showing the scars from their actions all those years ago. Let’s hope nothing like this happens in the future. Sadly, I do believe it is happening now with GMO and companies like Monsanto and Bayer. One day I think we will truly discover that the worlds cancer epidemic is caused mostly by the food we feed our children because we are being led to believe it is safe.” – Carol L.

“One international company that is having major issues with the governing body, the President of the United States, is Huawei. Huawei is a telecommunications conglomerate and they operate from China. The United States accused Huawei of spying for China government. Huawei sells 5g products and has a big market in China. They dabble in mobile phones, PC’s, laptops, and wearables. Huawei is allowed to sell some products in the United States, but they are restricted from installing telecommunication systems. Europe is an important market and the US is attempting to stop them from doing business together. The United States has very strict rules and regulations in regarding telecommunication companies. At one-point AT&T attempted to stop all outsourcing to bring more jobs to the United States. These law sometimes can be good, but some of them can be hurtful. For instance, in my opinion, it does not allow people to have multiple choices when selecting different products. Here in New Orleans we have one cable company. Allowing the government to control what services we can use is not fair to people who want to have options.” – Phillip P.
