“When I think about intellectual property, the first thing that comes to mind are brand logos. Unfortunately for myself C.J. already wrote a small piece on Apples logo. That got me to thinking about fast food places and while, yes they have their name written along side the logo, everyone knows that the golden arches means McDonalds. Having that logo protected makes the company recognizable. As C.J. said about Apple, no store world wide says Apple Store it just shows the logo. Think about a time when you were driving down an interstate and you see the huge golden arches of McDonald’s, I know that means the restaurant is off that exit and if I am hungry I know I am minutes away from food. Having something that makes your company stand out and is recognizable as your company is very important. Making sure no other company can copy that design helps make sure that everyone will register that design means your business. This is why protecting said intellectual property is important, it is what makes your business recognizable sometimes.” -Carl H.

“My previous company, Digital Current is an SEO company that as a whole, helps their clients retrieve higher rankings in Google search my digitally marketing and advertising their company by Search Engine Optimization. There are other SEO companies out there but not as many as you would like. It’s not like a McDonald’s chain that you might see at almost every corner or like a gas station. If you had knowledge of the SEO world, it wouldn’t be hard to start a company just like it. Because there are different tactics to help a company (client) reach their optimization goals, it is important that Digital Current keep their tactics to themselves. Upon being hired, you are entitled to sign an NDA or a nondisclosure agreement to protect Digital Current from any employees giving out their tactics, processes, prices etc to other SEO companies. If an employee did give out all of the business secrets, they could be at risk of repaying all of the profits that were lost of the clients that went elsewhere among other penalties.” – Stephanie C.
