Broward College Endocarditis & Septicemia Discussion
1. Endocarditis is usually caused by an infection. Bacteria, fungi, or other germs from another part of your body, such as your mouth, spread through your bloodstream and attach to damaged areas in your heart. Endocarditis may develop slowly or suddenly, depending on what germs are causing the infection and whether you have any underlying heart problems. Signs and symptoms of endocarditis can vary from person to person. Common signs and symptoms of endocarditis include: Aching joints and muscles Chest pain when you breathe, Fatigue, Flu-like symptoms, such as fever and chills and Night sweats
Septicemia occurs when a bacterial infection elsewhere in the body, such as the lungs or skin, enters the bloodstream. This is dangerous because the bacteria and their toxins can be carried through the bloodstream to your entire body.
The symptoms of septicemia usually start very quickly. Even in the first stages, a person can look very sick. They may follow an injury, surgery, or another localized infection, such as pneumonia. The most common initial symptoms are chills, fever, breathing very fast, and rapid heart rate.
What are the common diseases of the lymphatic system?
2.Septicemia also known as sepsis, is the clinical name for blood poisoning by bacteria and is the body’s most extreme response to an infection. This occurs when a bacterial infection in the body, such as the lungs or skin, enters the bloodstream. Signs and symptoms of sepsis include a high fever, a rapid heart rate, breathing difficulty, and confusion. Endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the inner lining of the heart chambers and valves (endocardium). This occurs when germs, usually bacteria, enter your bloodstream, travel to your heart, and attach to abnormal heart valves or damaged heart tissue. The germs or bacteria are normally by way of staphylococci (staph) and streptococci (strep). Sign and symptoms are fever (102°–104°), chills, fast heart rate, fatigue, night sweats, aching joints and muscles, persistent cough, or swelling in the feet, legs or abdomen.
The lymphatic system is a network of organs, tissues, vessels, and nodes that filter and circulate lymph throughout the body. The common microbial infection of the lymphatic system can be seen in the diagram below
