Microbial skin infections develop when bacteria enter through hair follicles or through small breaks in the skin that result from scrapes, punctures, surgery, burns, sunburn, animal or insect bites, wounds, and preexisting skin disorders. The most common skin infections are cellulitis, impetigo, and folliculitis which is caused by bacterial skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and group A β-hemolytic streptococci. Staph infections are caused by staphylococcus bacteria, which is a type of germs commonly found on the skin or in the nose of even healthy individuals. Group A streptococcus (GAS) bacteria is a Gram positive, beta-hemolytic coccus in chains. It is responsible for a range of diseases in humans such as strep throat, skin, and soft tissue infections such impetigo and cellulitis.

Neonatal conjunctivitis, also called ophthalmia neonatorum, typically presents during the first four weeks of life. Conjunctivitis in a newborn may be caused by a blocked tear duct, irritation produced by the topical antimicrobials given at birth, or infection with a virus or bacterium passed from the mother to her baby during childbirth. Doctors give intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) antibiotics to treat neonatal conjunctivitis and keratitis. However, if untreated, the newborn could develop corneal ulcerations (open sores in the cornea) and blindness.

It is usually caused by bacteria leading to an infection.
