Discussion Prompt: Reading Scripture
Following Augustine, how does Karl Barth (1986, 1–19) suggest we approach our reading of Scripture (e.g., John’s Gospel)? How does he explain our situation before the word of Scripture and that which it reveals or bears witness to, the Word, the Logos of God? Do you agree with his perspective here, and the idea that “the Bible is, namely, witness to revelation both in relation to revelation and yet also in distinction from it” (18)? State why or why not, with support from Barth’s discussion, Scripture itself, and outside reading (if applicable).
