Different states have different regulations set forth by that state’s Board of nursing regarding the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses. Doing so ensures public health safety by setting limits for health care professionals and setting standards for safe nursing practice for advanced practice nurses with qualifications, including license requirements in license renewal and necessary disciplinary actions (Milstead, 2019). Therefore, every individual nurse’s responsibility is to know their scope of practice by understanding and knowing the regulations set forth by the state in which they practice as it relates to their specific specialty or area of practice and stays in compliance.
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) is a nonprofit organization with 59 regulatory bodies in the U.S. (National Council of State Board of Nursing, 2020). The two APRN regulatory boards I will be discussing for this assignment are my home state of North Carolina in Texas.
In North Carolina, the education and certification requirements require nurse practitioners to complete an accredited program. With required courses in pharmacology, health assessment and diagnosis, pathophysiology, role development, various disease prevention, management courses, and client education. In addition to 400 didactic and preceptorship hours (N.C. Board of Nursing, 2020). In North Carolina, APRNs must complete 50 hours of continuing education each year by either ANCC or ACCME and an hour of other relevant course programs for prescribing practitioners in substance practice act. To stay in compliance with the state hours (N.C. Board of Nursing, 2020).
In comparison to Texas, the APRN educational requirements are regulated by the state’s Board of Nursing, which requires the program director for all master’s level nursing education to comply with the nurse practice act in State Board of nursing regulation (Texas board of nursing, 2018). Texas requires all APRN programs to have a uniform requirement to ensure safe and effective advanced practices. The state of Texas only requires their APRNs to complete 20 hours of relevant continuing education hours before renewing national nursing certification, in addition to five contact hours specific to pharmacotherapeutics earned within two years before license renewal.
Continued regulations for Licensure in continuing education requirements for APRNs are crucial to ensure educational competency and safety while always practicing. Both states also have rules for misconduct resulting from incompetent care or unsafe practice, harming patients, potentially leading to one’s license being revoked. Since autonomy comes with having advanced practice licensure, APRNs are responsible for complying with your state regulations by staying up to date and current with their education in practices within this specialty. By joining a professional organization such as the American association of nurse practitioners (AANP), they can access peer nursing journals, C.E. credits, seek certifications and expand their expertise within their professional areas of practice.
