University of Phoenix Exceptional Learners for Teachers Presentation
Assignment Directions
The principal at your school has asked you, as the special education teacher, to prepare a series of professional development workshops focusing on exceptional learners for teachers at the school. These workshops may be delivered during an all-school faculty meeting or during grade-level and content-area meetings. Your workshops need to be applicable to a minimum of 3 types of exceptionalities, since not all teachers will necessarily have the same students with the same exceptionalities in their classrooms.
Plan your professional development workshop series by creating a 12- to 15-slide presentation using a multimedia or web-based presentation tool such as Prezi®, GlogsterTM, Microsoft® PowerPoint®, or other tool approved by your faculty member.
Include an introduction in which you:
Identify the teacher audience for the professional development (e.g., elementary or secondary whole school, specific grade level, or specific content area).
Identify a minimum of 3 exceptionalities that are addressed in your workshops.
Introduce at least 4 professional development workshops scheduled throughout the school year.
Your professional development series must include 4 workshops with topics from each of the following areas:
- Ethical use of inclusion strategies
- Ethical considerations facing educators working with exceptional learners
- Ethical use of augmentative communication systems and assistive technologies
- Strategies for collaboration with students, parents, colleagues, and community members in an ethical manner
For each professional development workshop, provide the following components:
Topic of workshop
Brief summary
Characteristics of students with selected exceptionalities
Explanation of how the professional development workshop has application to instructional practices
Description of implementation of the workshop, including facilitation strategies and participant activities
Strategy for assessing or evaluating the workshop
Submit your professional development workshop presentation.
