Emergent leadership generally refers to a leading member of a collaborative group(Dubin 2016). No matter the title of the person holds, they exhibit emergent leadership through their behavior (2016). Traditional leadership emergence research paradigm, group participants might be measured on a number of traits that could possibly be related to leadership behavior(Kaplan and Norton 1993). Emergent leaders arise from the dynamics and processes that unfold within and among a group of individuals as they endeavor to achieve a collective goal(Bright et al. 2019).
Emergent leaders TAP into three principals of building Trust, creating Accountability, and leading with Passion(Crouch 2012). Working in different industries I have been able to see emergent leadership in myself as well as employees. Working for the American Airlines (AA), and flying you are your own boss. Having to step up and become the leader is something that is expected on a daily basis. When on the aircraft each person is accountable for their actions and completing their tasks in a timely matter. The principals TAP however do show up with AA. Each flight crew member attends training each year to be certified to evacuate an aircraft within 90 seconds(FAA 2020).
Covid 19 brought out many emergent leaders in the organization. Many individuals didn’t know which way to turn or what was coming next. Changes in policies and procedure were coming across daily to crew members. Stepping up and building trust in customers and crew members was something the flight attendants and pilots did to ensure the passengers felt at ease. Each crew member is held accountable for their behavior on the ground and in the air. Taking notice to your baggage, health, behavior, body language, and if you’re nervous (Good 2018).
It doesn’t take much to step up and ask how someone is doing. It has made a huge impact on so many passengers. An example would be when we had an engine fire. We hadn’t been in the air long when we got the call from the flight deck we had an engine fire, and needed to start emergency procedures. As scary as this is panic isn’t something that is help me or passenger. The cabin calls right back and side he put the fire out by shutting down the one engine. This means we didn’t announce we were doing an emergency evacuation. We were over the ocean when the pilot announced we would be returning to base. The passenger felt the trust and reassurance that we had everything under control as well as the accountability and passion to lead.
