As technology has evolved, so has its application in education. In this discussion you’ll examine how educational technology has changed through history. Prior to completing this discussion read Larson & Miller (2011) and view The RSA (2010).

Part 1: Research

  • First, identify a technology that was used in the classroom in each of the following time periods:

1950’s to 1970’s

Photo Copier

The first photocopier was introduced in 1959 under the company called Xerox. The Photocopier is an essential piece of technology that has been beneficial to students and educators in any educational setting. This machine has made teaching and educating very easy and convenient. The Photocopier makes copies of documents, while transmitting images from one source to another. Making copies is the process based on using electrostatic charges created on the light-sensitive photoreceptor for first attracting and then transferring toner to form an image on the paper (Orison. 2017). This technology tool affords teachers and educators the opportunity to provide additional resources to their students to help contribute to their academic success.

1980s-1990s

Desktop Computer

The first fully operational personal computer was introduced in the 1984. MacIntosh computer introduced their first desktop computer during a commercial at the 1984 Super Bowl. The Macintosh was the first successful mouse-driven computer with a graphical user interface and was based on the Motorola 68000 microprocessor. The personal computer has transcended the educational success of many individual. Today, teachers and instructors are able to conduct research, while providing additional resources and supportive material to their students to help enhance learning concepts. With the Use of technology in education is of great importance for both realization of effective learning teaching processes and raising individuals possessing competences necessary for being a member of the21st century society (Durak & Saritepeci, 2017).

2000-Present

Clickers

Classroom Response System or Clickers are a technology tool that is used in most high schools and post-secondary education programs. This tool affords teachers the opportunity to challenge students to answer questions to a related text, problem, or review questions. The results are then polled and the students are able to see the results to the given question. This technology tool is used to facilitate classroom discussions, warm ups, summative assessments, formative assessment, homework assessments, review games, and contingent teaching. Clickers are used as a catalyst for further discussion about students’ answers and how students’ answers compared to results
found in the literature (Shaffer & Collura, 2011).

Part 2

Technology has changed the filed of education in many ways. Students now have the opportunity to purse an education in the convenience of their own home or on location. Students are completing entire degrees and certification at their leisure. Technology has become so advance, students have access to so many resources to help enhance their educational experiences and reteach learning concepts. Over time teachers and instructors use to drive the learning process. Now students have the opportunity to drive their own learning experiences. Teacher are providing the material and students are taking control of how they learn whether that’s by the resources they use or the instructional tools they use to help aid in learning new concepts. As technology becomes more advanced I foresee students being in control of their own learning experience. Of course teachers will still provide instructions and guidance, however students will be responsible for finding resources, games, and innovative methods to help increase learning concepts.

How well has the field of education applied technology?

The education system has integrated and applied technology each time something new has been invented. Those involved in education take training to learn how to use the latest technology to integrate it successfully into the classrooms.

How has the application of educational technology changed over time?

Teachers are allowing students to have control over their education. When teachers allow students to interact with their peers, learn how they are comfortable, and engage in what interests them, they will stay focused and pull from their past experiences to apply to what they are learning.

Where do you see the future of educational technology going?

The future of technology in education will soon only be taught using computers, and students will be sitting at home while learning. Because of COVID, the education system sees that this can be done and will eventually do away with school and be fully online. Hopefully, this does not happen because children need socialization, and to be kept engaged and sitting on a computer for eight hours a day does not keep them focused. Teachers will still create the curriculum and lesson plans, but students will learn independently and have to find their resources for answers to their questions by using the internet.
