Muscat College Petrushka 1912 Danced by The Kirov Ballet Question
The will consist on watching the entire ballet, Petrushka (1912) danced by the Kirov Ballet. Feel free to review and re-read the module of the Diaghilev Period.
In this narrative ballet from the Diaghilev Period, you will see a lot of hidden symbolism that is reflective of the drama that was occurring within the company of the Ballet Russes. This ballet narrative would be equivalent to a New Year’s Russian Celebration. The Russian culture celebrates over several days. This carnival setting is the celebration.
Michael Fokine choreographed the ballet and Vaslav Nijinsky danced the original role of the clown (Petrushka). I see the Magician character as being Diaghilev and Petrushka as being Nijinsky. Look at the relationships and body language the Magician has with different characters within the ballet. Diaghilev was in complete control of the Ballet Russes and of Nijinsky. When Nijinsky ended up marrying Romola, everything changed and Diaghilev lost control…..
