Merritt College Logos Pathos and Ethos in MLK Letter Discussion
I’m working on a creative writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Okay, now that you’ve read over the “Letter” and hopefully answered all the Questions for Discussion, let’s work together to identify how MLK weaves together logos, pathos, and ethos to create a truly masterful argument in his attempt to persuade his audience of clergymen (and the world!) that his cause was just.
Go down and closely reread paragraphs 1-14.
Choose three paragraphs which for you strongly exemplify these three appeals: ethos — to establish credibility and trust; pathos — to appeal to our emotions and capacity for empathy; logos — to establish the logic and provide the evidence for his claim. That is, one paragraph for ethos, one paragraph for pathos, and one paragraph for logos.
After identifying your three strong examples of logos, ethos, and pathos, be certain to give us the reason for your interpretation — in other words, don’t just tell us! Persuade us with close argument and evidence that your interpretation of King’s appeals are correct!
Then, take the time to comment upon your fellow students’ responses as well!
Enjoy!
