You will write the first part of your research and/or EBP practice change proposal.  

As you learned from the first week’s readings, a well-constructed proposal is required to obtain approval to complete a project or conduct research.  

A proposal describes the project in detail to include: the purpose, the significance, the state of the literature on the topic, the research design, methods, participant recruitment and protection, and how you will analyze the data gathered during the project itself.  

You are not conducting the project in this course.  You are developing the proposal to submit to the IRB. The introduction is the first part of the EBP proposal.

Assignment Guidelines

1. Complete all the required readings for Week 1.

2. In the discussion forum for week 1, you identified a nursing problem or area of interest that you will focus on for your evidence-based proposal and you have formulated the research question that you will be a part of your project throughout this course.  

RESEARCH PROJECT TOPIC PROPOSAL EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE(EBP) PREVENTINE PRESSURE ULCERS IN THE GERIATRIC POPULATION

The research topic that interests me is the Preventing Pressure Ulcers in the geriatric population for those that are 65 years or older, which has becoming increasingly prevalent in the healthcare setting where these pressure ulcers cause death because of poor management. Each year, more than 2.5 million people in the United States develop pressure ulcers. These skin lesions bring pain, associated risk for serious infection, and increased health care utilization. Pressure ulcers are associated with longer hospital stays and increased morbidity and mortality. They also remain a serious problem despite regulatory and market approaches to encourage prevention and treatment. About 60,000 patients die as a direct result of a pressure ulcer each year.

PICOT Question: In older adults aged 65 years old with pressure ulcers, is the Braden scale an appropriate tool of utilization necessary to assess risk of skin breakdown, compared to a non-standardized assessment tool for skin breakdown in older adults upon 24 hours of admission?

 3. Using the information from discussion forum 1 (as described above), you are to write the introduction to your EBP proposal.  

You will include:

-The purpose of your EBP project in either a question or statement format (Review PowerPoint from week 1 reading)

– A detailed description of why your project is important.  Include the background and clinical significance of the question or the problem.  

You will support the background and significance of the topic with evidence from current nursing articles, textbooks, or websites (current within 5 years). 

-A well-structured PICOT question is included reflecting the foundation of the proposal.
