I’m working on a english discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.

Topic A: Comedy and Violence 

Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov, who gave a series of Harvard lectures on   Don Quixote, described it as “one of the most barbarous books ever written.” Roberto Gonzalez points to both the inn and the Duke and Duchess’s mansion as venues for violence: “The inn, in addition to being a crossroads for reconciliation, is also a locus for violence. It will be replaced [in Book two] by the duke’s mansion—a more solid structure but a veritable house of fictions” (110).  Using specific evidence from the novel, compare the violence that takes place in the inn and its courtyard in Book one with the violence that occurs within the Duke and Duchess’ mansion and on their fictional Isle Barataria in Book two. Who are the perpetrators of violence in each case and their motives?  Is your reaction to the violence of the physical comedy in Book two different? Explain. 

Topic B: Hunting with the Duke and Duchess

In Ch. XXXIV, the Duke and Duchess use a hunting expedition as the prelude to their staging of a procession of carts, one of which bears the veiled Dulcinea accompanied by Merlin, who sets the conditions for her disenchantment.  

The Duke explains to Sancho the importance of hunting as a training ground for warfare.  How does Sancho reveal and defend his own views of hunting in this episode?  How would you describe Sancho’s feelings about animals in general based on the chapters you read for module five and other evidence from the novel? Do you think he can be considered an early example of a spokesperson for animal rights? Whose views of hunting are closer to your own, the Duke’s or Sancho’s? Explain. 

Topic C:Sancho’s governorship

Describe the characteristics you look for in a good governor.  Which of these do you consider most important?  Using these criteria, evaluate Sancho’s performance in his brief tenure as governor.  Be sure to support your points with specific evidence from the novel. During Sancho’s short time as governor, he issues a number of edicts and rulings. Which of these addresses a problem or problems still relevant in today’s society? Do you agree with the way Sancho tries to solve this problem? Support your response with specific evidence from the novel. Sancho’s resignation is followed by a poignant speech. Do you think there is a lesson here for those who aspire to political office today?
