UNC Chapel Hill Hope for Change in The Black Community Discussion
For this performance project, you will develop a 4-6 minute performance of your chosen methodology which engages with activism, possibility, and/or futurity. Throughout the semester, we have watched/read/witnessed numerous examples of performance as activism. Many of the performers we have seen have drawn on themes of hope, imagination, and narrative storytelling to imagine countless possibilities, or innumerable futures for themselves or others. Your project should seek to engage with similar themes within the context of a chosen social issue. You can use any methodology you’d like, as long as you can justify your decisions. Lastly, this final performance should make meaningful connection to the performance example we read, Wayward Lives, whether simply through thematic connection or using similar methodology.
For my performance, I want to use dramatic storytelling from a 21 Year old white male perspective who has grew up playing sports (American Football) with African American males. Both my roommates are brothers who are of color and I have grown up with them and see what they have gone through first hand. My story needs to focus on activism, futurity and hope for change in the black community. I grew up playing basketball with one of my roommates (John) and we played football in high school and Im now playing football with his brother Javon at the collegiate level. Focus on activism and how being a white male playing football and getting to see others perspectives of people of color. Both my roommates John and Javon are from lower class neighborhoods and I am from a middle class neighborhood but most of my childhood friends are African American males from lower class neighborhoods.
