The purpose of this assignment is to start building your final project early. This assignment will be graded on a 30-point scale. It accounts for 10% of your final grade. This is an individual assignment.

Key requirements:

The research question or hypothesis proposed must be communication-related. The literature cited should be peer-reviewed journal articles. All citations must follow APA style.

Grading:

Please see the grading rubric at the end.

Please answer the following questions. Type your answer below each question.

  1. What is your RQ? Clearly state your RQ in a question form (i.e., ends with a “?”)
  2. Your justification for picking this topic (answers to “so what?” and “who cares?” questions). You need to explain to me why you chose this topic, why is it worthwhile to study? What will your findings add to the existing knowledge on the topic? In APA style, please provide two pieces of literature that can support your justification. These two pieces can be newspaper articles or websites.
  3. Which theory are you planning to use to guide your research? What is the theory about? What are its key propositions? What are the major IV and DV in the theory? In APA style, please include at least one article/book chapter to indicate the source of your information. If you have more than one article, please list all of them.
  4. How is the theory going to help answer your RQ? To answer this question, you have to read some previous publications on the topic of the theory and write up a short paragraph on its application. Please include three unique articles here in APA style. These articles should link the theory with your topic.
  5. Do you have a possible hypothesis/hypotheses based on the research question? If so, state your hypothesis. If not, keep your RQ as it is. No need to answer this question. If you do have a hypothesis, you need to state your rationale for your prediction. Please cite one to two articles here (no citation needed if you have no hypothesis).
  6. What is (are) the key variable(s) in your RQ or Hypothesis? If you know what your IV and DV is, please distinguish them. No article is needed here.

Note: All literature listed should be written in APA style in a separate paragraph under each appropriate question. No literature (except for #3) should be published more than five years ago, i.e., prior to 2014.

Helpful steps in completing this assignment:

  1. Figure out the key concept(s) (variables) associated with your topic.
  2. Run a literature search using the key concept in a communication database and locate the latest peer-reviewed publications on the key concept.
  3. Read a few articles and make a list of theories the authors used in the articles. Adopt one for your research.
  4. Search in the database again on the theory and get to know it well.
  5. The best articles should be those that include your key concepts in their keywords.
  6. Check with the grading rubric and see if you are on the right track.
